Cancer Survivor Sues over Grilled Chicken Carcinogen
Fast-food companies market grilled chicken as a healthful option, but most consumers have no idea that the products harbor a dangerous carcinogen. Two Connecticut residents have teamed up with The Cancer Project to file a class-action lawsuit demanding that Burger King, Friendly's, and McDonald's warn customers that their grilled chicken products contain PhIP, a chemical that increases cancer risk even in small amounts.

The lawsuit, filed in October in Connecticut Superior Court, states that the three restaurants are in clear violation of the state's consumer protection law. Rebecca Delio, one of the Connecticut plaintiffs, ate fast-food grilled chicken weekly before being diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago. She was alarmed to learn that grilled chicken increased her cancer risk.

PhIP is one of a group of carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). PhIP and other HCAs form when animal muscle is cooked at high temperatures. Longer cooking times and hotter temperatures produce more HCAs, which make grilling, panfrying, and oven broiling particularly dangerous cooking methods. Fried chicken, which contains high levels of saturated fat, is also unhealthful.

"Consumers deserve to know that grilled chicken from McDonald's and other fast-food chains can increase their risk of cancer," says Neal Barnard, M.D., president of The Cancer Project. "Even a grilled-chicken salad increases the risk of developing breast cancer or prostate cancer."

Other fast-food chains are also feeling the heat on PhIP. In September, PCRM filed a lawsuit in San Francisco against Kentucky Fried Chicken for violating California's Proposition 65. The chicken chain failed to warn consumers that its new grilled chicken product contains this dangerous carcinogen.

Fungus-free, mold-free peanut butter: I found one and it's yummy!

Fungus-free, mold-free peanut butter: I found one and it's yummy!

Over the past year, I have been "trying" to avoid all forms of peanut butter, including organic, due to the high levels of multiple strains of cancer-causing fungus (i.e. Jimmy Carter's family has lots of cancer). Boy have I been missing it, especially the natural kind without all the yucky fillers and Crisco taste! But wait! Maybe there is hope yet....

Arrowhead Mills Valencia Organic Peanut Butter:
Available at Whole Foods and other health food stores. You can also get it online at some discount warehouses. Make sure it says Organic Valencia on the jar.

Only Valencia peanuts are safe from fungus because of "where" they are grown: Arizona (dry, arid climate).
http://www.deliciousorganics.com/Controversies/peanuts.htm

Now here is the reason it's such a big deal which type of peanut butter we eat. Too bad the author didn't know about the Valencia peanuts, and many of his peanut butter-loving readers were upset about the news. Maybe I'll write to him:
http://www.deanesmay.com/archives/007598.html

Scary quotes from the article:

"By the way, the aflatoxin threat is taken seriously enough that OSHA actually requires workers dealing with large quantities of peanuts to wear facial masks so they don't breath in too much of the mold."

"Statistically, just as a rule of thumb, two tablespoons of peanut butter a day produce a higher risk of death than living next to a nuclear power plant. A lot higher, if you eat peanut butter made from peanuts that sit around on the shelves for weeks at a time, or from opened jars of peanut butter that sit around unrefrigerated for weeks at a time."

Keep in mind that I do not recommend eating peanut everyday even if it's fungus and mold-free because peanuts (soy too) block iodine production to the thyroid, which is a big problem in this country in regard to excess weight. These are foods to eat in moderation and only organic.

Iron-Rich Foods (lots of Vegan choices)

Check out red kidney beans, lentils, almonds, and wholemeal bread on the table below. They are all very healthy and contain as much and more iron than beef in the same size portions. Not everything on the list is healthy, unfortunately. I also found on other websites that black beans and black eye peas are very high in iron. I cook them in the crock-pot super easy and they are delicious. I also make vegetarian chili out of the red kidney beans in the crock-pot (yummy!).

P.S. I found this on another website. Check out the statement about vitamin C:

Vegetable and Fruit Groups
Dark green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach, chard, and collard greens are good sources of iron because they tend to be low in calories and are rich in vitamins and minerals. Aim for five servings a day. Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, which helps your body absorb iron.

Protein-Rich Foods in the Vegan Diet

Protein in the Vegan Diet
by Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D.

http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

Summary
It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein, as long as calorie intake is adequte. Strict protein combining is not necessary; it is more important to eat a varied diet throughout the day.
Some Americans are obsessed with protein. Vegans are bombarded with questions about where they get their protein. Athletes used to eat thick steaks before competition because they thought it would improve their performance. Protein supplements are sold at health food stores. This concern about protein is misplaced. Although protein is certainly an essential nutrient which plays many key roles in the way our bodies function, we do not need huge quantities of it. In reality, we need small amounts of protein. Only one calorie out of every ten we take in needs to come from protein 1. Athletes do not need much more protein than the general public 2. Protein supplements are expensive, unnecessary, and even harmful for some people.
How much protein do we need? The RDA recommends that we take in 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram that we weigh (or about 0.36 grams of protein per pound that we weigh) 1. This recommendation includes a generous safety factor for most people. When we make a few adjustments to account for some plant proteins being digested somewhat differently from animal proteins and for the amino acid mix in some plant proteins, we arrive at a level of 1 gram of protein per kilogram body weight (0.45 grams of protein per pound that we weigh). Since vegans eat a variety of plant protein sources, somewhere between 0.8 and 1 gram of protein per kilogram would be a protein recommendation for vegans. If we do a few calculations we see that the protein recommendation for vegans amounts to close to 10% of calories coming from protein. [For example, a 79 kg vegan male aged 25 to 50 years could have an estimated calorie requirement of 2900 calories per day. His protein needs might be as high as 79 kg x 1 gram/kg = 79 grams of protein. 79 grams of protein x 4 calories/gram of protein = 316 calories from protein per day. 316 calories from protein divided by 2900 calories = 10.1% of calories from protein.] If we look at what vegans are eating, we find that between 10-12% of calories come from protein 3. This contrasts with the protein intake of non-vegetarians, which is close to 14-18% of calories.
So, in the United States it appears that vegan diets are commonly lower in protein than standard American diets. Remember, though, with protein, more (than the RDA) is not necessarily better. There do not appear to be health advantages to consuming a high protein diet. Diets that are high in protein may even increase the risk of osteoporosis 4 and kidney disease

The recommendation for protein for adult males vegans is around 56-70 grams per day; for adult female vegans it is around 46-58 grams per day (see text).

It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein. Nearly all vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds contain some, and often much, protein. Fruits, sugars, fats, and alcohol do not provide much protein, so a diet based only on these foods would have a good chance of being too low in protein. However, not many vegans we know live on only bananas, hard candy, margarine, and beer. Vegans eating varied diets containing vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds rarely have any difficulty getting enough protein as long as their diet contains enough energy (calories) to maintain weight. [See the sections on Pregnancy, Lactation, and Infants and Children (pages 176-197 in Simply Vegan, 4th edition) for details about protein needs during these special times.]
What about combining or complementing protein? Doesn't that make the protein issue much more complex? Let's look at a little background on the myth of complementing proteins. Protein is made up of amino acids, often described as its building blocks. We actually have a biological requirement for amino acids, not for protein. Humans cannot make nine of the twenty common amino acids, so these amino acids are considered to be essential. In other words, we must get these amino acids from our diets. We need all nine of these amino acids for our body to make protein.
Some people say that eggs, cow's milk, meat, and fish are high quality protein. This means that they have large amounts of all the essential amino acids. Soybeans, quinoa (a grain), and spinach also are considered high quality protein. Other protein sources of non-animal origin usually have all of the essential amino acids, but the amounts of one or two of these amino acids may be low. For example, grains are lower in lysine (an essential amino acid) and legumes are lower in methionine (another essential amino acid) than those protein sources designated as high quality protein.
Frances Moore Lappe, in her book Diet for a Small Planet 6 advocated the combining of a food low in one amino acid with another food containing large amounts of that amino acid. This got to be a very complicated process, with each meal having specific amounts of certain foods in order to be certain of getting a favorable amino acid mix. Many people got discouraged with the complexity of this approach. Actually, Lappe was being overly conservative to avoid criticism from the "Nutrition Establishment." She has since repudiated strict protein combining, saying, "In combating the myth that meat is the only way to get high quality protein, I reinforced another myth. I gave the impression that in order to get enough protein without meat, considerable care was needed in choosing foods. Actually it is much easier than I thought" 7.
Table 3: Amounts of Foods Providing RecommendedAmounts of Essential Amino Acids
12-1/3 cups of cooked corn OR 6-1/2 large potatoes OR 2-1/2 cups of tofu OR 15-1/2 cups of cooked brown riceAny one of the above foods, eaten in the amount specified, would provide the recommended ammounts of all essential amino acids for an adult male. Women would need about 20% less of each food due to lower recommendations. This concept is illustrated below:

Food Try Thr Iso Leu Lys Met+Cys Phe+Tyr Val
Adult RDA,154 lb male 1 350 1400 1330 2940 2660 1330 2310 1680
12-1/3 cups corn 443 2521 2521 6777 2660 1820 5326 3616
6-1/2 large potatoes 760 1768 1963 2940 2951 1365 3946 2743
2-1/2 cups tofu 780 2045 2480 3808 3298 1333 4112 2530
15-1/2 cups cooked rice 899 2573 2960 5766 2666 2418 6231 4108

Source: USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 18, 2005.Notes: Amounts of amino acids are in milligrams.

Try=tryptophan,Thr=threonine,Iso=isoleucine,Leu=leucine,Lys=lysine,Met+Cys=methionine+cysteine,Phe+Tyr=phenylalanine+tyrosine,Val=valine

We recommend eating a variety of unrefined grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, and vegetables throughout the day, so that if one food is low in a particular essential amino acid, another food will make up this deficit 8,9.

Even if you ate only one food and not the variety of foods typical of a vegan diet, you would probably get enough protein and essential amino acids. Remember, almost all protein sources of non-animal origin contain all of the essential amino acids. You would have to eat a lot of the protein source (if there was only one source of protein in your diet) to meet essential amino acid needs. Table 3 shows the amounts of various foods an adult male would have to eat if he relied on a single food source for his protein needs. Females would need about 20% less of each food due to the lower protein recommendation for women.

Dear NaturalNews / NewsTarget readers,

If you grind up 10 pounds of meat from a diseased cow and sell it, the USDA says that's dangerous. But if you grind up 10 pounds of meat from a diseased cow and mix it with one pound of meat from a non-diseased cow, the USDA says that beef is perfectly safe to feed to schoolchildren! Fascinating logic, huh? Today's feature story reveals the shocking truth about the USDA's betrayal of the public and its beef recall hoax that only seeks to protect the profits of beef industry companies.

MEAT OF CLONED ANIMALS NOW LEGAL for Human Consumption - The FDA is playing God!

Subject: MEAT OF CLONED ANIMALS NOW LEGAL for Human Consumption - The FDA is playing God!

Dear Friends and Family,

This is frightening! Read the article below carefully. They mention continuing a "voluntary" moratorium. Don't be fooled by that. Producers are only interested in their profits and don't care about anything they've been asked to do on a voluntary basis. Here is a good example. Over 16 years ago, on a "voluntary" basis, the FDA asked drink manufacturers to eliminate Sodium Benzoate from drinks that contained Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) due to the possible formation of Benzene (a known carcinogen). Today, there are still many drinks containing Benzene on store shelves, and we have been drinking them!

I can't help but wonder how long this "voluntary" moratorium on cloned animal meat and dairy has been in place.

Global rise in Breast Cancer due to 'Western lifestyles' (and an Important Note from Me)

Global rise in Breast Cancer due to 'Western lifestyles' (and an Important Note from Me)
February 14, 2008

Dear Friends and Family,

Yes, it's me again.... I realize that many of you are loving these educational health emails and my health classes, and, as a result, are experiencing medically-documented health improvements. I know this only because you tell me. I also suspect that I'm probably driving some of you crazy. Too bad. Ok, just kidding. It's hard to tell whose life is going to get saved by sharing God's ways of healing, therefore, you all get them. If you are not into optimal health God's way, please hit the "delete" key. I will be the first to admit that I hit the "delete" key on almost every single forwarded email that I receive, except for those that serve a useful purpose. I know I should probably spend more time reading funny emails and laughing my head off (laughter is very healthy), but raising a family, home-schooling, doing my health ministry, and keeping up my OCD habits of researching health matters doesn't really leave me much time for that. I also don't have time to keep verifying the hoaxes on snopes.com, so I just delete those too now (i.e. 99.9% of the "Missing Person" and all other "take action" type emails are all verified hoaxes). The enemy is having a great time distracting too many of us from what is really important in the form of these time-wasting, fictitious emails that circulate the internet.

I said all that to say this, the reason there have been so many of these health emails lately is that we are in a state of emergency. Our health is progressively getting worse on an exponential level. I know "way too many" people that are sick unnecessarily, and up until a few months ago, I was one of them! Something's gotta give. Let's put an end to this madness! Not only are the sick people suffering, but their loved ones are suffering, and those of us receiving the prayer lists are suffering too. In the meantime, we are all getting distracted from fulfilling God's purpose in our lives. I get so sad when I remember how much time I missed from working in ministry and spending time with my kids because of health issues that dragged me down. But I have to move forward and make up for it by sharing the message that we don't have to be sick. Let's work together to share the good news that God still offers us healing today for both our souls and our bodies ("The thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10 - KJV). Yes, abundant life! That's the kind I want. Thanks, Jesus!

I don't believe it's a coincidence that in my last email I mentioned the dangers of our Western diet and lifestyle, although I just now received "this" article via email newsletter. With God and me there are no coincidences. I am sending this to you so that you can learn how to prevent this completely avoidable and very reversible disease of breast cancer for yourself and your loved ones through God's completely natural methods (men, you can get it too). We have lost too many of our moms, sisters, cousins and friends unnecessarily! We don't have to be next! God has a much better plan for us. He wants us healthy and effectively working for Him and taking care of our families! The enemy is using illness to distract us from the main goal. Let's get with the program, and give God the glory. God's program that is!

One last note on something that I can no longer keep from saying and that some of you may disagree with: I believe, and thousands of healed people, doctors, and much science will confirm this, that mutilating surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are unnecessary and will actually cause possibly permanent damage to our immune systems and vital organs. These methods of treatment are actually worse than the disease itself (just read The China Study and find out how you can turn cancer on and off like a switch by adjusting the amount of protein you consume instead of the chemo you endure) . Radiation treatments are extremely toxic to the body. Does it not seem strange that we are trying to cure cancers with a treatment that has been proven to cause cancer? What about chemo? The success rate of chemotherapy is only a shocking 3%, yet doctors play with the words and lead you to believe that it is 50% (success means a five-year survival rate)! The medical profession generally considers any drug with less than 30% effectiveness no better than a placebo. How has the cancer industry gotten away with a ridiculous 3%? It's called statistic manipulation and spinning. I call it the lies of the enemy. We need to remember who God is and what He is about and make sure that our decisions line up with His character and promises. Often times we believe that God leads us to something that is quite often just craftily covered-up deception. This is expressed so well in the famous words of a lovely pastor I know, "God told you to do this? Wow! When God spoke to you, was he wearing a red suit with a long tail and carrying a pitch-fork?"
Percentage of oncologists who said if they had cancer they would "not" participate in chemotherapy trials due to its "ineffectiveness and its unacceptable toxicity" - 75%
Percentage of people with cancer in the U.S. who receive chemotherapy - 75%.

(More quotes on: http://www.whale.to/cancer/quotes1.html)

If we live out God's truth, we can live victoriously! Now that's encouraging!

All for His Glory,

Global rise in breast cancer due to 'Western lifestyles'
By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor
Thursday, 24 January 2008

Of all the exports from our modern world, breast cancer ranks as among the most dubious. Once thought to be a disease of the rich, it is now a global epidemic. (YES, THE MAJORITY OF MEAT AND DAIRY CONSUMPTION WAS HISTORICALLY DONE BY THE RICH AND THE ROYAL. THE POOR AND MIDDLE CLASS WERE NOT EATING MUCH MEAT AND DAIRY PRODUCTS AT ALL UNTIL LATER IN THE 20TH CENTURY. UP UNTIL THEN, THEIR DIET CONSISTED OF MAINLY FRUITS/VEGETABLES, GRAINS, LEGUMES, AND NUTS/SEEDS. IT'S NOT THAT THEY DIDN'T WANT MEAT AND DAIRY, IT'S JUST THAT THEY COULDN'T AFFORD THEM. ONCE THEY BECAME AFFORDABLE, DUE TO GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES TO THE MEAT AND DAIRY INDUSTRIES, THE REST OF US STARTED CONSUMING THEM REGULARLY AND GETTING JUST AS SICK AS THE RICH AND THE ROYAL. IT'S SO SAD THAT THE ORGANIC FRUIT AND VEGETABLE INDUSTRIES GETS NO SUCH SUBSIDIES, AND NOW WE CANNOT AFFORD THEM! IT SOUNDS LIKE EASY ALGEBRA TO ME....IF A=B AND B=C, THEN A MUST......YOU GET THE PICTURE.)

The rise of the cancer in Europe and America – cases have jumped 80 per cent in the UK since the 1970s – is being mirrored across the world. And scientists say increasing prosperity and the "Westernisation" of traditional lifestyles is to blame.

A richer diet, smaller families, delayed childbearing and reduced breast-feeding have driven the increase in the West, together with rising obesity and increased alcohol consumption, specialists say. Now these trends are being seen everywhere – with a growing burden of malignant disease in their wake.

An estimated 1.3 million new cases were diagnosed around the world last year. It is the commonest cancer in the UK and across Europe, even though it affects almost only one gender. In 2006, it outranked lung cancer, which affects both sexes, for the first time.

In Japan, Singapore and Korea – countries once renowned for their low rates – cases have doubled or tripled in the past 40 years.

In China, urban cancer registries have recorded 20 to 30 per cent increases in the past decade. India has seen similar rises and cases have doubled in parts of Africa. There are doubts, especially in Africa, about how far better recording has contributed to the apparent rise. But scientists agree that the disease is rampaging across the globe.

However, they disagree about the best way to curb it. Some claim the best hope lies in developing a preventive drug – a hormonal cocktail that would act like a vaccine and provide lifelong protection – and criticise the world's failure to focus attention on it. (NO, WE DON'T NEED MORE DRUGS THAT KILL US AND GET PULLED OFF THE MARKET YEARS AFTER THE FDA SAYS THEY ARE SAFE. WE NEED TO FOLLOW GOD'S NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE PROGRAM. HE HAS ALREADY GIVEN US EVERYTHING WE NEED TO PREVENT DISEASE.)

Others demand political action, raising public awareness and galvanising governments to provide screening and early treatment that gives women the best chance of surviving. (SCREENING IS GREAT, BUT PREVENTION IS WAY BETTER THAN EARLY OR LATE TREATMENT!) A third school of thought emphasises the need for a public health strategy to highlight the risks of alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise. (YES, NOW WE'RE TALKING!)

Peggy Porter, of the Fred Hutchinson Research Centre in Seattle, Washington, writing in the current New England Journal of Medicine, says the world must wake up to the growing threat. (FINALLY, SOMEONE SAID IT BESIDES ME!)

"As more countries modernise, more women will enter an increasingly sedentary workforce, delay childbearing, exert control over their reproductive lives, live longer and eat a more Westernised diet. Their breast cancer rates will no doubt increase. It is crucial that women's awareness of their risk and their expectations of their government and the medical community regarding detection and treatment increase at a similar rate." (WHAT NEEDS TO INCREASE IS AWARENESS OF HOW EASY IT IS TO PREVENT THIS UNNECESSARY DISEASE AND NOT TO RELY ON GOVERNMENT OR THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY TO FIX A COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE PROBLEM. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?)

Professor Porter said the biggest barrier to improved care for women was ignorance. "In a lot of countries, women are still afraid to know. When Betty Ford [wife of US President Gerald Ford] admitted she had breast cancer in 1974, it changed the world. Women who had seen it as a death sentence became willing to talk about it, pushed for more care and more research. Other countries need to follow that lead."

Valerie Beral, head of the Cancer Research UK epidemiology unit at Oxford University, said that to blame Westernisation was to miss the central cause – changes in child-bearing. (THAT IS ONE OF THE ISSUES BUT NOT THE CENTRAL ISSUE. DIET AND DETOXIFICATION TRUMP CHILD-BEARING ISSUES.)

"We don't need to seek subtle explanations when we know the main one. China has gone from the six-child family to the one-child family in a couple of generations. Most women in the past had six or seven children – it was fairly standard across the world. Each child was breast fed for two to two-and-a-half years, which meant they stopped ovulating and didn't conceive. The hormonal changes that occur around child-bearing and during breast-feeding are protective for life." (YES, IT'S AMAZING WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DO WHAT OUR BODIES WERE DESIGNED BY GOD TO DO.)

We need to investigate the nature of this hormonal protection and synthesise it, she said. "If we could find out why child-bearing gives life-long protection against breast cancer we might develop a hormonal cocktail that could be given to women at age 18 for a year which would have the same effect. I am frustrated that this is not a research priority." (I AM FRUSTRATED THAT SHE IS MISSING THE POINT. WE CANNOT IMPROVE ON GOD. NO SYNTHETIC HORMONAL COCKTAIL WILL REPLACE WHAT HE HAS ALREADY PROVIDED IN NATURE TO HELP BALANCE OUR HORMONES.)

Peter Boyle, head of the International Agency for Cancer Research in Lyon, which will publish global cancer rates next month, said alcohol was the most worrying driver for younger women. "The rise is a huge problem and one which is growing enormously quickly. There are places which 30 years ago had very low rates where it is growing very rapidly. In every region it is the commonest or second most common cancer. (ALCOHOL ABUSE IS A HUGE PROBLEM, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE MOST WORRYING DRIVER. THERE ARE MANY MORE YOUNG WOMEN EATING POORLY THAN THOSE THAT ARE OVER-CONSUMING ALCOHOL.)

"My concern is over the rise in drinking, especially among young women. For each single unit of alcohol per day, the risk rises by 7 per cent. It's the ladettes who hit the bars on a Friday night that I worry about."

Why rates have risen

* The rising breast cancer rates around the world are linked to increased exposure to the female hormone oestrogen, because of changes in reproduction and diet. (YES!)

* Improved nutrition means girls reach puberty earlier and women have the menopause later. A century ago, girls had their first periods at 16 and 17, but today it is morelikely to be 12 to 13. (TRANSLATION OF IMPROVED NUTRITION BY THEIR STANDARDS: EXCESS DAIRY AND MEAT PRODUCTS AND POSSIBLY EXCESS SOY, WHICH HAPPEN TO LEAD TO HORMONAL ABNORMALITIES SUCH AS THESE.)

* Each year that the menopause is delayed increases the risk of contracting breast cancer by 3 per cent.

* Increased numbers of women going out to work has led to later births, smaller families and fewer women breastfeeding. Each year that childbirth is postponed beyond the mid-20s increases the breast cancer risk by 3 per cent. (I AGREE. MINE CALCULATES TO 30% SINCE I GAVE BIRTH TO MY FIRST CHILD AT 35 AND MY SECOND AT 39. IT THREW MY HORMONES OUT OF WHACK, AND I CONTINUED OVULATING ALL THROUGH 14 AND 16 MONTHS OF NURSING MY GIRLS. THAT WAS NOT NORMAL! I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED AT ALL IF I ALREADY HAD UNDIAGNOSED BREAST CANCER FORMING OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. AFTER INCORPORATING "MASSIVE" NUTRITION INTO MY DIET IN CONCENTRATED FORM, I WAS ABLE TO NOTICE A HUGE WONDERFUL DIFFERENCE IN MY THERMAL IMAGING EXAMS PERFORMED ONLY THREE MONTHS APART. AGAIN, GOD'S FOOD ROCKS AND WORKS FAST.)

* The more children a woman has, the lower her risk of breast cancer so the trend towards smaller families has increased many women's exposure.

* Breast cancer rates vary widely around the world. Japan has one fifth of the cases diagnosed in the US. However, Japanese women who move to the US rapidly acquire the same risk as American women. (YES, THEY DO! IT'S BECAUSE THEY START EATING AND BECOMING COUCH POTATOES JUST LIKE US. IT'S NOT BECAUSE THEY ALL OF A SUDDEN DECIDE TO HAVE LESS KIDS.)

* Breast cancer in the UK has risen by 84 per cent since the 1970s. In 2005, 38,212 women were diagnosed with the disease. (HOW INTERESTING THAT THE FIRST MCDONALD'S IN THE UK OPENED IN 1974.)

* Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in the UK even though it mostly affects one sex (there are a few hundred cases in men). Lung cancer, the next most common, which affects both sexes, was diagnosed in 30,997 men and women in 2005.

Subject: Amazing information on Breast Cancer health you don't want to miss!

Dear Friends and Family,

I requested the attached information from my new friend, Audrey, who performed my Thermography exams in August and November. Personally, I refuse to have Mammograms due to radiation exposure and found Thermography to be a wonderful alternative for me. I was thrilled to see tremendous improvements in my follow-up exam in November, and cannot express how grateful I am to have learned about this method of early detection. If you feel that Mammograms are necessary for you, I highly recommend adding Thermography as a complement to it because of its ability to catch irregularities years before they become a serious problem. The attached information will easily help you understand why! Please watch the video clip first (FOR LADIES ONLY DUE TO GRAPHIC NATURE). The clip is from a television news program.

Wishing you blessed health,
Miriam

BREAST CANCER: New Link With Deodorants
September 16, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
British scientists have uncovered a fresh connection between deodorants and breast cancer: Women who had surgery for the disease had high levels of aluminum in their breast tissue.

Researchers fear the metal could have been emitted from spray-on and roll-on deodorants. The study done in the U.K., which included 17 patients who underwent mastectomies, will be published in the November issue of the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry.

The team identified aluminum in the samples and noted that levels increased significantly near to the armpit. Dr Chris Exley, who led the study reported, ”We found a wide variation in concentrations of aluminum. Some patients had low concentrations while others had quite high concentrations. We don’t know that aluminum originated from anti-perspirants but one can put two and two together and make a guess on that. The next work will be to see if the aluminum is coming from underarm deodorants or elsewhere.”

In 2004, Dr Philippa Darbre from Reading University in the U.K. suggested deodorants could raise the risk of cancer because they contain estrogen-mimicking chemicals called parabens. She found higher levels of parabens in the breast tissue of cancer patients.

COMMENT: From vaccines to deodorants, aluminum is a significant health problem. Add it to the list of petrochemicals and xenoestrogens that have been identified as causes of breast cancer.

October is fast approaching and with it the arrival of “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” In fact, today was the Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio “Race for the Cure.” Runners were featured on the Saturday morning local talk shows and newspapers.

What is the charm of ”Running for the Cure” and raising money for drug company research? The Cure will not end breast cancer. Wouldn’t it be better to raise money for researching, identifying and eliminating the causes?

Exaggerated Faith in Mammograms: A Better Way

September 11, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
Several years ago, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported on a study that included 145 women who assessed their feelings about mammograms and found the following:

Women over estimated their probability of dying of breast cancer within 10 years by more than 20-fold.
Women over estimated the risk reduction of annual screening mammograms more than 100-fold.
The study concluded, “women younger than 50 years substantially over-estimate both their breast cancer risk and the effectiveness of screening.”
COMMENT: Everywhere you look — in print, on TV, across the Internet and even at the cosmetic counters of department stores — mammogram advocates are pushing the procedure as if it was the ultimate cure for cancer. It is not.

While early detection may save lives, screening mammograms do not prevent cancer. In the 1980s, by the time a woman found a lump, the tumor was advanced. Annual mammography came into wide acceptance around that time as a way to find a tumor before it could be felt. The idea was that by finding it early, treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemo could reduce the breast cancer death rate. By this measure, mammograms are a success.

Instead of demanding cancer prevention, we scream for early detection. Researchers stopped looking for the cause because we’re demanding the Cure. We run and sweat to raise money for “research.” Does anyone see the problem with this? We are really raising money for the drug companies - which have more wealth than most countries - to cure something we can avoid with the right tools.

In addition to finding the cause, we need to demand that a state-of-the-art breast thermogram be performed with every breast exam and every mammogram. We need to insist that insurance companies cover this test as readily as they cover mammograms and cancer therapies. With thermography, areas of concern can be identified and addressed by dietary and lifestyle changes, lymph drainage exercises, evidence-based vitamins and nutraceuticals. Improvements can be closely followed by non-invasive, non-painful infrared imaging. If the area of heat goes away, the risk of progression, by definition, goes away.

Vitamin D and breast health: True Cancer Prevention

September 7, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
A new study suggests the number of cases of colon and breast cancer could be cut dramatically if people got more Vitamin D. University of California researchers estimate 250,000 cases of colon cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D. Sunlight spurs production of vitamin D in the skin, and people who don’t get much sun exposure tend to have lower levels of the vitamin. “There’s been a lot of evidence for a long time that vitamin D is very important, not just for bones, which everybody knows, but for all the organs in the body,” said Dr. Larry Norton, an oncologist at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

COMMENT: I always have a mixed set of feelings when Conventional Medical “confirms” what I’ve been saying for many years: Vitamin D will be changed from a vitamin to a hormone due its widespread effect and importance on every organ in the body. I feel happy for patients who will now follow through with more vitamin D; sad that many could have benefited from larger doses of vitamin D but did not because of an over-blown fear of consuming more than the recommended 400IU per day dose.

This current article suggested dose of 2,000 IU a day will be helpful. However, is still less than Vitamin D that most people need. A study published in January, 2007 by the Council for Responsible Nutrition documented that at least10,000 IU per day is safe…that is the amount that I recommend to my patients, especially those at highest risk of breast cancer. By the way, I don’t think it is necessary to get a blood test to “confirm” a low level. Vitamin D is inexpensive and the tests aren’t always accurate. Take the supplement and don’t bother with the blood test.

Suggestions such as high doses of Vitamin D are true prevention. Correcting an underlying biochemical deficiency using a natural substance is definitely a step in the right direction.

Who isn’t familiar with the expression, “early detection is the best prevention?” We hear this term throughout the year and most everyone is familiar with this catch phrase as it relates to breast cancer. Obviously, a woman’s chance for survival improves when a cancer is found early. We hear that simple rhyming statement but are women really offered early detection?

Our gold standard for breast cancer screening is mammography, clinical breast exam and self-breast exam. Other techniques are used but all current technologies examine structure; something is formed and large enough to be seen or felt. However, it is well-documented that a mass that is detected by mammography has been growing for 8-10 years before it was detected. Is this early detection?

There exists a technology that can detect an issue YEARS before a tumor can be seen on X-ray or palpated during an exam and truly offers early detection. This technology has been approved by the FDA as an adjunctive screening tool since 1982 and offers no radiation, no compression and no pain. For women who are searching for early breast cancer detection, digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) may be of interest.

Historically, DITI fell out of favor shortly after its initial debut in the early 80s. When DITI was first introduced, strict protocols and trained technicians did not exist. Shortly after its initial beginnings, DITI fell out of favor as a diagnostic tool in the medical community.

There are now very strict protocols both for testing and interpreting. Perhaps due to these guidelines, thermography is exploding in its technique and capabilities. Thermal cameras detect heat emitted from the body and display it as a picture on a computer monitor.

These images are unique to the person and remain stable over time. It is because of these characteristics that thermal imaging is a valuable and effective screening tool. Tumors or other breast diseases measures warmer than surrounding tissue and can thereby alert a physician to a problem before a tumor is actually palpable.

Medical doctors who interpret the breast scans are board certified thermologists. Thermography is not limited by breast density and is ideal for women who have had cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, women who refuse mammography, or women who want clinical correlation for an already existing issue. Thermography, because it analyzes a developing process, may identify a problem several years before mammography. As we all know, early detection is important to survival.

DITI has an average sensitivity and specificity of 90%. An abnormal thermogram carries a 10x greater risk for cancer. A persistent abnormal thermogram carries a 22x greater risk for cancer. Thermography, as well as mammography is a personal choice for women. This decision ideally should be made in collaboration between you and your physician. However, thermography does not require a physician’s order.

COMMENT: This was a wonderfully written press release that I reprinted in its entirety. Why? Because it came from a online newspaper from Sofia, Bulagaria. An Eastern European country is advocating the use of thermography; U.S. doctors should take note.

Foods for Breast Health

August 31, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
New, conprehensive research shows that regular consumption of grape juice can prevent painful breast, chronic cystic mastitis and breast cancer. Scientists and natural medicine practitioners have discovered that a glass of 100 per cent grape juice made from the type of grape known as concord grapes can prevent breast cancer.

Dr. Keith Singletary, a professor of nutrition and the lead researcher at the University of Illinios stated that, “the purple grape compound demonstrated the capacity to inhibit DNA adduct formation, increase the activity of the enzymes that metabolize and detoxify carcinogens and suppress cancer causing oxidative stress.”

The new study suggests that anthocyanins in other fruits and juices, such as cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and red apples, warrant further study for their breast cancer chemopreventive potentials.

COMMENT: It has frequently been said, “You are what you eat.” Eating more fruits and veggies is important, but when it comes to breast health, specific foods are very important. In addition to those “RED” foods listed above, here is a list of foods from a 2004 medical article that shows you how to Color Your Way Healthy with different types of fruits and vegetables:

Red Group: Tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon. Contain lycopene for prostate health, heart disease, and lung disease.

Yellow/Green Group: Spinach, collard greens, yellow corn, peas, avocado and honeydew melon. These foods lutein and zeaxanthin for the eyes.

Orange Group: Carrots, apricots, cantaloupes, acorn squash and sweet potatoes. Contain antioxidants and betacarotene.

Orange/Yellow Group: Oranges, papayas, peaches and nectarines. Contains cryptothanxin, for prevention of heart disease.

Green Group: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale. Contain sulforaphanes, isothiocyanates and indoles which affect enzymes and break down carcinogens.

White/Green Group: White wine, garlic, onions, celery, pears and chives. Contain flavonoids and allicin, which appears to deter the growth of tumors.

Thermogram vs. Mammogram

August 28, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
People often wonder if a thermogram is better than a mammogram, or if they can get a painless thermogram instead of a painful mammogram. Though both tests are used to detect breast cancer, each test has a different purpose.

A thermogram detects subtle heat changes that point to an area of evolving pathology in the breast. This may or may not be cancer. A mammogram is used to detect a mass that has already formed in the breast, often identified by a cluster of calcium specks. By the time a mammogram locates a tumor, it has been growing for at least 5 years.

Making the decision about getting a thermogram vs. a mammogram should be done with much discussion about risk factors, family history and lifestyle. For example, if you have had many years normal mammograms, have no family history and have a great lifestyle coupled with a normal thermogram and normal clinical exam, you may want to consider having a mammogram every three to four years and simply get an annual clinical exam and thermogram. However, if you have a very strong family history, drink alcohol and don’t take supplements, you may want to consider annual mammograms in addition to your annual exam and thermogram. If you have a very abnormal thermogram and you have not had a mammogram in several years, you must get a mammogram (and possibly an ultrasound) right away.

The most effective way to find breast cancer is to use all available tools as often as is necessary. For example, a clinical breast exam performed by highly trained fingers can identify 61% of tumors that turn out to be cancer. Adding a mammogram, increases the ability to find a cancer to 84%. Research done in Montreal in the mid-1990s demonstrated that adding a thermogram to breast exam and conventional mammogram increases the ability to find cancer early — do something about it — to 95%. Thermography not just an either/or test; it is a value-added test that both you and your doctor should learn more about.

Why Do We Insist on a Breast Cancer Cure?

August 25, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
From The New York Times, August 25: Marlene Wrightsman, a registered nurse, takes time for her annual mammograms. On October 23, 2006, she was diagnosed with cancer. Wrightsman was placed on the fast conveyor belt: Her small, non-palpable tumor was removed less than 10 days after it was discovered, followed by chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments. She is an advocate for annual mammograms.

COMMENT: I am happy to report that, according to the article, Ms. Wrightsman joined the ranks of the breast cancer survivors.

Notably, the speed of her treatment demonstrates how positive mammograms are treated like five-alarm fires, hurrying patients through the protocols as though they were hemorrhaging to death. Truth is, her cancer had been growing for many years — possibly as many as seven years — before the anatomical changes were detected on her mammogram.

While early detection of cancer can improve survival, we have lost our demand for finding the cause. In its place, we eagerly walk, run and raise money for The Cure. In a list of the top 15 drugs used in clinics in 2006, 12 of them are chemotherapy agents, topping more than $118 million in drug company revenues…and this is not an all-inclusive list. This is the industry’s idea of Finding the Cure; they have no interest in the Cure. That would mean a significant loss of market share and revenues. Women really need to grasp the reality of that.

We must do better: We must demand identification and elimination of the Cause.

Science has identified more than 200 chemicals that accumulate in breast tissue; many are known carcinogens. We must demand research dollars be spent developing detoxification methods, measuring the true effect infrared saunas, acupuncture and detoxing baths. The Cancer Industry won’t fund anything like this. It will have to be a non-profit that is truly interested in preventing the tragedy of breast cancer.

Women need to demand prevention, not The Cure. We have to stop being satisfied with ”finding it early.” We need to redefine the meaning of early detection.

Low Dose Radiation and Breast Cancer Risks

August 24, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
According to the International Journal of Cancer, some forms of low-dose radiation treatment, including chest xrays and for acne treatments, may increase the risk of breast cancer, particularly in genetically susceptible women.

Self-reported information was available for 2,254 breast cancer patients and 3,431 healthy women, which included the sisters of the patients or women from the general population. Radiation treatment of a previous cancer increased the risk of breast cancer by 3.55-fold. They also noted a trend toward higher breast cancer risk among women who received radiotherapy for acne or other skin conditions. Women who had diagnostic chest X-rays for tuberculosis or pneumonia had more than twice the normal risk of breast cancer.

COMMENT: Conventional medicine stopped using routine annual chest xrays years ago because of the increased risk of cancer. It is time for women to understand that routine mammograms are leading to the same endpoint. For each 1 rad of radiation (which is about 2 mammograms) the risk of cancer is increased by 1 percent. Radiation accumulates it doesn’t simply pass through the tissues onto the plastic plate.

Thermography’s only error is that it is “too early.” The tools to address a positive thermogram include diet, exercise, iodine, and other neutraceuticals that conventional doctors know little, if anything, about. It is in this capacity that the paradigm must shift.

Increasing the widespread use of thermography is an exciting opportunity. By painlessly screening younger women using a high resolution tool without radiation, we may be able to prevent or minimize not only cancer, but all breast disease.

Prophylactic Mastectomies: Where’s the Science?

August 21, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
Blog posts M-W-F…please spread the word!

COMMENT: This amazing abstract deserved to be posted in full. Conventional medicine poo-poos thermography, writing it off as having “no proof of efficacy” and having ” no support in science” despite years of published studies and clinical evidence. New research points out that aggressive medical procedures, such as prophylactic bilateral mastectomies even in women with BRCA genes, has little foundation in science. My vote would be for non-invasive, RISK FREE, pain-free and radiation-free prevention rather than radical surgery with little science to support it. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ABSTRACT From International Journal of Cancer Published Online: 30 Apr 2007

Mini Review: Effectiveness of preventive interventions in BRCA1/2 gene mutation carriers: A systematic review by M.J. Bermejo-Pérez et al

A systematic review of the literature was conducted to assess the outcomes of preventive interventions (prophylactic mastectomies, intensive cancer screening, and chemoprevention such as Tamoxifen) in women who carry mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, in terms of reducing breast and gynecological cancer incidence and/or mortality.

A search for relevant articles published between 1996 and 2005 (inclusive) was run on Medline, Embase and other databases. From the 749 journal articles retrieved from this search strategy, [only] 18 studies were eligible for this review (2 systematic reviews, 10 cohort studies and 6 case-control studies). The critical appraisal of the studies was performed by two independent reviewers with a list of ad hoc selected criteria. The synthesis of results was qualitative.

Mastectomy and prophylactic gynecological surgery (oophorectomy [ovaries removed] or salpingo-oophorectomy [ovaries and tubes removed] ) reduced breast and gynecological cancer incidence in carriers of BRCA mutations, by comparison to surveillance. However, all the studies presented flaws in internal and external validity, none of these preventive interventions is risk-free, and protection against breast and gynecological cancer, as well as other cancers linked to BRCA mutations, is incomplete.

No studies comparing surveillance programs of varying intensity were found. Exposure to drugs (such as tamoxifen and oral contraceptives) in women carrying BRCA mutations was assessed through a limited number of papers. All of these were case-control studies with prevalent cases and presented major methodological flaws.

Additional comment: Where’s the science to support this disfiguring, radical procedure?

Mammograms fail…again

August 17, 2007 — Sherri Tenpenny, DO
NOTE: Blog posts M-W-F…please subscribe!

In the push to get MRIs approved for breast cancer screening, the ugly truth about the poor performance of mammography is coming to light.

In the August issue of The Lancet, a study was reported that included 7,319 women who were followed for 5 years at a national academic breast center in Germany. During that time, 193 women were diagnosed through surgical biopsy with “pure” ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. Of those, 167 had undergone both mammography and MRI preoperatively. The MRI had correctly identified 92 percent of DCIS while mammograms had missed almost half (46 percent). With high-grade DCIS, MRI picked up all 89 tumors; mammography missed half (48 percent.)

COMMENT: This study is being lauded across news outlets as a “break through” for early detection of breast cancer but be not deceived: It’s not prevention. The MRI is identifying the tiny specks of calcification that cannot be detected by a mammogram.

DCIS is not life-threatening. It is non-invasive, and is considered the earliest form of cancer—Stage 0. Most women who are diagnosed with DCIS are treated with radiation in an attempt to prevent recurrences. However, a new cancer may turn up 25 years later—or longer. This usually happens in the same area of the breast where the DCIS was. Sadly, there are steps that can be taken to improve health — such as the right nutrients, iodine and estrogen-lowering supplements — that can help prevent cancer from coming back.

The intent of the research on MRIs (this is one of many) is to force insurance companies to approve MRIs for annual screenings to the tune of $1000-1500 per exam in comparison to about $150 for screening mammograms. That means insurance premiums will increase; those costs will be passed along to the insured.

Most importantly, research on MRIs should clearly point out the undeserved confidence women have been programmed to have in mammograms. A normal annual xray may be nothing more than a temporary clean bill of health. This fully explains why women can have a normal mammogram five-six-seven years in a row and then the next year, they have cancer. The Lancet study confirms mammograms are *not* early detection!

The goal of breast health is to find areas of concern — and address them — before the tissues degrade to cancer. While thermograms do not identify non-invasive calcifications, they have the ability to detect areas of DCIS that are starting to become aggressive, reflected as increased heat.

Size 0 is the new 8!

0 is the new 8 - The Boston Globe

I knew they were making clothes too big now in relation to the size listed on the label! Here's the scoop! I am wearing less than a size 6 in most of today's clothes. That's ridiculous! I am 12 pounds heavier than I was when wearing a size 5 in the 90s (back then 125 lbs). I think I had to weigh at least 120 lbs. to wear a size 5 in the 80s. Realistically, I am more likely a true size 8-10 since I am 137 lbs and 5'5". America's perception of proper weight/size has gotten so warped since fast food came around! A "true" size 6 woman can now buy 0-00 size clothes at some stores like Ann Taylor, etc. Check out the details below:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/05/05/0_is_the_new_8/

Don't despair! Eating multitudes of the right foods can get us all to our ideal weight! You can eat as much as you want of the right foods, including yummy ones, and reach your body's ideal weight. Counting calories, fat, carbs, etc. is unnecessary. Put the right fuel in your body and get rid of the toxins and watch what happens naturally! It's a blast to eat as much as you want and watch the pounds melt away (even without exercise, but exercise is necessary for good overall health)!

A Single Meal Can Lead to Good (or Bad) Health - Dr. Mercola

A Single Meal Can Lead to Good (or Bad) Health

It takes just one “bad” meal -- a cheeseburger, fries and a soda, fried chicken and biscuits, a slab of chocolate cake and ice cream -- to do damage to your body, according to new research.

The good news, however, is that eating just one good meal will start to repair the damage.

This occurs because, when you eat, your body breaks down the food into glucose (sugar), lipids (fats) and amino acids (the building blocks of protein).

As soon as you polish off the last of your high-fat, high-sugar meal, the sugar causes a large spike in your blood-sugar levels called “post-prandial hyperglycemia.” In the long term this can lead to an increased risk of heart attack, but there are short-term effects as well, such as:

Your tissue becomes inflamed (as occurs when it is infected)
Your blood vessels constrict
Damaging free radicals are generated
Your blood pressure may rise higher than normal
A surge and drop in insulin may leave you feeling hungry soon after your meal
Eating healthy foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, lean proteins, and high-fiber items, will stave off post-prandial spikes and help to keep your blood-sugar levels even.

Even a small amount of alcohol appears to help blood-sugar levels stay stable.

The desire to eat junk food is a vicious cycle, the researchers pointed out, as the more you eat it the more your body craves it. This occurs because junk food distorts your hormonal profile, stimulating your appetite and causing you to crave unhealthy foods -- while making you feel unsatisfied when you eat only healthy ones.

The risky blood sugar spikes that follow a junk food meal are most likely to occur in people who don’t exercise, or who carry weight around their abdomen.

BODY CLEANSING - CRUCIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH - from Dr. Mercola's Website

BODY CLEANSING - CRUCIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH - from Dr. Mercola's Website

This is a hot topic right now as more and more people are finding an inability to properly absorb nutrients from food, and several of you have been asking me about body cleanses. I have known about these cleanses for years, but with pregnancies and breastfeeding each child for over a year each I got way behind on doing them. I am a member of an internet health forum with 11,000 members, and body cleansing has been a "hot" topic lately in the battle for optimal health.

You don't need to do these all at once. It is probably best to start with a full body cleanse like the one Dr. Mercola is recommending here.

Blessings,
Miriam

Here is another great article that I found yesterday discussing how important it is to remove the toxins and the pounds of old dried-up fecal matter that line our intestines:
http://barefootherbalistmh.com/uploads/File/Lower%20Bowel%20Balance.pdf
Dredging Out Poisons is Crucial

To help you examine why cleansing may be helpful to your overall health, let’s compare it to a non-human model…

We make it a national priority to clean the toxins from our rivers. Why not your body also?
You may or may not be aware that many rivers are full of poisons that make them unfit for recreation, wildlife, food supplies (fish), and even commerce. Numerous rivers, both inside and outside of the United States, have been or are slated for dredging to clean up PCBs.

Take these rivers, for example…

Hudson River – the largest federal Superfund site, stretching a 200-mile span to clean up PCBs dumped there from 1946 to 1977.
Clinton River in Michigan – scheduled for clean-up of toxic contamination at levels three times higher than much-publicized Rouge River pollution.
Columbia River near Vancouver, Washington – where a PCB hot spot three feet deep with concentrations as high as 300,000 ppb (parts per billion) will be cleaned up, to not exceed a level of 98 ppb.
And there are many more, both in the U.S. and abroad. But some rivers are dredged for other reasons…

Not Just for Poisons, But Dredging for Regular Accumulations of Sediment Too

Dredging is for cleaning up non-toxic but hazardous sediments also. Remember to clean the sludge from your body.
Dredging is even performed when there is no contamination. Rivers carry sand and soil with them as they flow toward the ocean. The greater the water speed, the more capacity it has to move sand, silt and even rocks with it. Then when the water slows down, materials that were suspended in the water drop down to create sand and gravel bars that can impede navigation.

If enough sediment falls out, the deposits create shoals or sandbars, making navigation channels shallower than shown on navigation maps. Shoals are hazardous as they can cause ships to run aground, damaging the vessel and its contents… and even damaging the environment if dangerous cargo is spilled in the waterways.

Dredging is underwater excavation used to re-establish the channel for smooth navigation, and to clean up contaminants. Periodic dredging is performed to keep a channel clear and safe for navigation and other purposes, called maintenance dredging.

What does this have to do with your internal cleansing? More than you might think…

Ways to Show Toxins the Door

Here’s what I mean…

You could be taking in more toxins than you realize – through pesticides on your foods, by eating unhealthy convenience food loaded with preservatives, drinking chlorinated water, smoking or alcohol use, auto exhaust and other environmental pollutants, the skin care products you use, and your own metabolic wastes.

Although normally present in small amounts, it’s easy to see how toxins can accumulate over a period of time (just as the pollutants in our rivers accumulated over time).

Your detoxification program should include an exercise program that creates profuse sweat.

There are only a few ways you can show toxins the door.

Exercise that creates a large amount of sweat is a very effective way to facilitate toxin elimination. If you’re not engaged in an exercise program that causes you to sweat profusely on a regular basis, consider starting one today.

Additionally, it’s the job of your liver and colon to force toxins to exit your system. Removing toxins and cleansing your intestinal tract can then set a healthy stage for reintroducing beneficial microflora, which is critical to good overall health.*

It is clearly not recommended to cleanse excessively, but many adults benefit from 2-4 cleanses per year.*

Also, while not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing, I believe that cleansing when you want to get pregnant is a great way to prepare your body for optimal health.* It’s also very appropriate after weaning your child to promote cleansing of your body.*

Just as periodic dredging of a navigation channel in a river is done to clean it up, conscious commitment to cleaning your internal organs and digestive system on a regular schedule makes good sense.

It helps you get rid of the ‘sludge’ of toxins and other non-helpful things that build up in your system over time.* Here’s why…

Your Liver – a Critical Organ to Protect

Your liver, weighing about four pounds, is the second largest organ of your body (your skin is the largest) and its largest gland. It performs more than 500 separate jobs, and is critically involved in every aspect of your metabolism. It’s the central ‘chemical laboratory’ of your body, producing chemicals you need to survive, such as bile, albumin, blood clotting factors, cholesterol, and vitamin E.

Perhaps its most important function is the secretion of bile. This fluid is stored in the gallbladder and released as needed for digestion.

Bile is essential to break down fats into small globules, and also helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and helps assimilate calcium. It converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. Further, it promotes intestinal peristalsis and normal bowel function.

Your liver plays an important role in fat metabolism, and production of cholesterol, lipoproteins, and phospholipids. In a complex process catalyzed by a series of enzymes, your liver converts amino acids (proteins) and lipids into glucose.

Your liver helps regulate normal blood sugar levels, by creating glucose tolerance factor (GTF) from chromium and glutathione. Sugars not needed immediately are stored in the liver and converted back into sugar when needed for energy. Excess food is converted to fat in the liver and carried to your body’s fatty tissues for storage. When needed, it provides energy for the brain, heart and muscles.

Subject: Massive USDA recall of beef already eaten by schoolchildren

NaturalNews / NewsTarget Insider Alert (www.NaturalNews.com) newsletter

Thanks to a secret slaughterhouse video that went ballistic last week, the USDA has finally seen fit to issue a massive recall for 143 million pounds of beef that may be contaminated with mad cow disease (a fact that, of course, shall remain entirely unmentioned by the USDA and the MSM). Unfortunately, they forget to mention that most of the beef being recalled has already been consumed by schoolchildren because it was sold at bulk-rate discounts to school lunch programs! Ya just gotta love these USDA num-nuts, huh? The best way to protect the profits of the beef industry is to wait until everybody has already eaten the beef before you issue the recall!

Today, we bring you a feature article that will rock your world if you're still eating beef. Learn more about not only mad cow disease, but also "energetic contamination" of beef products, and why eating beef makes people angry, fearful and violent. Click the headline below to read:

Brown Seaweed Extract - Power "Plant" Burns Fat!

1/17/08

Dear Friends and Family,

I have been receiving a lot of questions about my recent weight loss and thought I would go ahead and let you all know what's going on.

Fucoxanthan mentioned below is the part of Fucoidan that gives it it's brown pigment color. My personal weight loss and that of many other people I know consuming Fucoidan and Pomegranate extracts together and living a fairly healthy lifestyle are consistent with the findings in the two human clinical trials mentioned here (average of about 3+ lbs per month). Also, the Newswise Science article at the bottom contains information on clinical trials with animals revealing weight loss success and mentions extracting Fucoxanthan for human use so that we are not required to consume large amounts of seaweed and for better absorption of the nutrients.

I am at 17-18 lbs. so far (easiest weight-loss ever in my life) and can't even imagine what dieting, exercise and going to bed on time would have added to my progress(I need to get on that). I made no diet changes and had continued eating a small amount of animal products during the first 10 lbs of weight loss (late June to late September). Sometime in October I "almost" completely eliminated the small amount of animal products that I had been consuming over the past 7 years (mainly while eating out or at social functions and of course caving in to my cheese addiction). I am now on the high carb (whole grains of course), high vegetable and little bit of fruit program and have continued losing weight at about the same rate as I did during the first 10 lbs.! So much for Atkins..... I am currently about 99.5% Vegan and reserve that .05% right in order to eat pure, non-mercury fish if I can ever find or afford any (please let me know if you can find the kind Jesus ate cause I really want some...seriously) and maybe a very occasional Kosher/Organic special food of some other animal sort that would really be worth the 2 days it would take to digest (obviously that would not include pork or shellfish which are un-Kosher and take about 2 years to digest...or is it 20? hee, hee). So much for the Cuban roast pig party on Christmas Eve.....Bummer!!!! It smelled really good too. I hope that one bite of pork I took to taste my sister's seasoning has finished digesting by now... Maybe next time I'll wear a nose-clip and a blind-fold so I can resist and not have to rely on willpower.

Blessings,
Miriam

Power "Plant" Burns Fat!

Most people know that eating more calories than you burn is the main contributor to weight gain. While it is easy to understand that caloric intake is entirely dependent on your dietary habits, you might wonder about how the body burns those calories. Besides using energy to allow our organs to function and muscles to contract (like when working out and even for everyday activities like walking), it is also spent to produce heat via a process called thermogenesis. This literally means generation of heat, hence the term “burning” fat.

Fat is the fuel for thermogenesis, which can be amplified by compounds that make the body produce more heat, called thermogenic substances. The thermogenic substances like ephedra, ma huang and guarana can cause undesired side effects, such as jitters, increased heart rate and loss of sleep. Now research has discovered a natural non-stimulant thermogenic compound that supports burning of fat without these undesirable side effects. It is called fucoxanthin.

Fucoxanthin is a brown pigment found in some marine vegetables or seaweeds, such as kombu and wakame. It belongs to the class of compounds called carotenoids, along with beta-carotene in carrots, lycopene in tomatoes and lutein in dark green leafy vegetables. Unlike beta-carotene, which is metabolized into vitamin A in the body, fucoxanthin works by affecting the function of intracellular structures called mitochondria.

Mitochondria are often referred to as “power plants” of the cell. This is where fat burning takes place resulting in generation of heat, or thermogenesis. Research shows that fucoxanthin increases production of uncoupling protein 1(UCP1) in the mitochondria. UCP1 is a protein that causes mitochondria to make more energy that dissipates in the form of heat. This results in higher metabolic and fat-burning rate in the fat cells where the fuel is stored. This effect of a special concentrate of fucoxanthin was shown to be further enhanced by pomegranate seed oil. Two recent human clinical studies reviewed the effect of this fucoxanthin and pomegranate seed oil formulation when used in conjunction with an 1800 calorie diet. In one of the human clinical studies, this proprietary combination produced a statistically significant increase in the energy expenditure rate of 18.2% over placebo in 16 consecutive weeks. In the other clinical study the participants lost an average of 14.5 pounds, compared to 3 pounds in the placebo group. These studies are being prepared for publication in peer-reviewed journals in 2007.

Chemists in Japan have found that brown seaweed, a flavor component used in many Asian soups and salads, contains a compound that appears in animal studies to promote weight loss by reducing the accumulation of fat. The compound, fucoxanthin, could be developed into a natural extract or drug to help fight obesity, the researchers say. Their study will be described Sept. 11 at the national meeting of the ACS.

Brown seaweed, used as a flavor component in many Asian soups and salads, contains a compound that appears in animal studies to promote weight loss by reducing the accumulation of fat, according to researchers at Hokkaido University in Japan. Shown is Undaria pinnatifida, a type of brown seaweed also known as wakame.

Chemists in Japan have found that brown seaweed, a flavor component used in many Asian soups and salads, contains a compound that appears in animal studies to promote weight loss by reducing the accumulation of fat. Called fucoxanthin, the compound achieved a 5 percent to 10 percent weight reduction in test animals and could be developed into a natural extract or drug to help fight obesity, the researchers say.

The compound targets abdominal fat, in particular, and may help reduce oversized guts, the scientists say. Their study was presented today at the 232nd national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Fucoxanthin is a brownish pigment that gives brown seaweed its characteristic color and also conducts photosynthesis (the conversion of light to energy). It is found at high levels in several different types of brown seaweed, including a type of kelp that is used in traditional Japanese miso soup. But fucoxanthin is not found in abundance in green and red seaweed, which also are used in many Asian foods, the researchers say.

The brown seaweed used in the current study was Undaria pinnatifida, a type of kelp also known as wakame, which is widely consumed in Japan. As kelp forests are found in abundance along the California coast, the new research findings could represent a potentially lucrative market if kelp — of which there are many varieties — can be developed into effective anti-obesity drugs, according to the scientists.

“I hope that our study [points to a way to] help reduce obesity in the U.S. and elsewhere,” says study leader Kazuo Miyashita, Ph.D., a chemistry professor at Hokkaido University in Hokkaido, Japan. The compound appears to fight fat through two different mechanisms, he says.

The study involved more than 200 rats and mice. In obese animals fed fucoxanthin, the compound appeared to stimulate a protein, UCP1, that causes fat oxidation and conversion of energy to heat, Miyashita says. The protein is found in white adipose tissue, the type of fat that surrounds internal organs. As the abdominal area contains abundant adipose tissue, the compound might be particularly effective at shrinking oversized guts, the researcher says. This is the first time that a natural food component has been shown to reduce fat by targeting the UCP1 protein, he says.

The pigment also appeared in animal studies to stimulate the liver to produce a compound called DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid, at levels comparable to fish oil supplementation. Increased levels of DHA reduce ‘bad cholesterol’ (low density lipoprotein), which is known to contribute to obesity and heart disease. But unlike fish oil supplements, fucoxanthin doesn’t have an unpleasant smell, Miyashita says. No adverse side effects from fucoxanthin were reported in the mice and rats used in the study.

But eating lots of seaweed is not the quickest or most convenient path to weight loss, Miyashita cautions. He notes that a person would probably need to eat huge amounts of brown seaweed daily to cause noticeable weight loss. That’s because fucoxanthin is tightly bound to proteins in the seaweed and is not easily absorbed in the form of whole seaweed. However, he hopes to extract the most active form of fucoxanthin from brown seaweed so that it can be developed into a pill that people can take daily or as needed.

Human studies are planned, the researcher says, but adds that it may take three to five years before such an anti-obesity pill is available to consumers. Until then, people should continue to eat a well-balanced diet and get plenty of exercise, he says. Funding for the current study was provided by the Japanese government.

The American Chemical Society — the world’s largest scientific society — is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

The paper on this research, AGFD 039, will be presented Monday, Sept. 11, at 8:45 a.m., at the San Francisco Marriott, Nob Hill C, during the symposium, “Functional Foods and Health.”

Kazuo Miyashita, Ph.D., is a chemistry professor in the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences at Hokkaido University in Hokkaido, Japan.

BABIES BEING BORN PRE-POLLUTED: Sign the petition for Congress to stop this insanity

One of out of every 30 babies today is born with birth defects! It is believed that this incredible increase is due to the toxic load that they carry of about 300 chemicals. Although I am done having babies, my heart breaks for those being born to my friends and family. Please join me in putting an end to this madness and click below to sign the petition.

"What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
1 Cor. 6:19-20

Dear miriam,

On Thursday, I testified in a U.S. Senate hearing, and I want to tell you what I told the Senators.

Babies are coming into this world pre-polluted with toxic chemicals.

When EWG tested the umbilical cord blood of 10 Americans, we found nearly 300 chemicals, including BPA, perchlorate, fire retardants, lead, mercury, and PCBs.

The best way to stop this pre-pollution is to enact the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act, which would require that chemicals be proven safe for children before they can be sold.

Click here to sign our petition. Now is the time for Congress to introduce the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act.

The chemicals are in us. The risk of disease and illness is serious.

The chemicals we found are increasingly linked to serious long-term health effects, from childhood cancer and autism to ADHD, learning deficits, infertility, and heart disease. We need a system for assessing chemicals so our children get the healthy start they deserve. The longer Congress waits, the more babies are exposed.

Sign EWG Action Fund's petition to Congress
Join the 1000's of other Americans who are telling Congress it's time for a real federal toxics law that will make chemicals in consumer products safe for kids.

Click here to add your name to our petition. Congress needs to hear from you right now. We've waited long enough.

Thank you for speaking up for a new national chemical policy that places human health front and center -- right where it should be.

STOP Taking MULTI-VITAMINS Until You Read This! by Dr. Mercola (even the ones that are labeled as "Natural")

The following article by Dr. Mercola confirms what I have been educating so many people on lately. If you look at your vitamin bottle label and instead of seeing food and herbs as the only main ingredients, you see something like this, you are taking SYNTHETIC vitamins:

Vitamin A (beta-carotene, palmitate) 4,000 IU 80% Daily Value (DV)
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) 125 mg 210% DV
Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopheryl) 25 IU 80% DV
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 6.25 mg 420% DV
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 5 mg 290% DV
Niacin (niacinamide) 15 mg 80% DV
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl) 7.5 mg 380% DV
Folic acid 100 mcg 25% DV
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin or methylcobalmin) 25 mcg 420% DV
so on....

To make it look more attractive, some companies even throw in a few food-based ingredients into the section labeled "Other Ingredients." However, the "main ingredients" are still synthetic and can cause health problems in the future. Another issue is that those few food ingredients may not even be organic and now you have a whole new issue to deal with.

STOP Taking Multivitamins Until You Read This!
by Dr. Joseph Mercola

Did you know your multivitamin may be creating toxic build up within your body? The deadly secret multivitamin suppliers hope you never discover...
What if you discovered your multivitamin was punishing you instead of helping you?

What would cause me to ask you this?

Believe it or not, all multivitamins are not created equal. Some may, in fact, inflict enough punishment on you that they should probably be flushed down the toilet.

Radical?

Consider this... If your multivitamin is synthetic, how do you know it's even doing you any good? Are you assuming that because you take a 'multi' you're guaranteed better health than if you don't - because it seems like the healthy thing to do?

Obviously if you take a multi, this is something you'll want to check out.

Why You Should Avoid Synthetic Isolates Like the Plague...
In my opinion, if you shop for your supplements at discount stores you may be seriously shortchanging yourself because those products typically use cheap synthetic isolates.

Millions gorge themselves on synthetic vitamins, only to acquire and die from degenerative diseases.

You see, isolated vitamins are partial vitamins, combined with other chemicals. They're a low-end alternative to whole, real complete food.

When you remove a part from the whole, you get 'Synthetic,' 'Isolated,' or 'Fractionated' pieces of the whole, but it's simply not the same.

There are four problems with synthetic vitamins...

Nature intended for you to consume food in WHOLE form because all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes are together in one package. They work synergistically to give your body the nutrition it requires for optimal health.

Your body only absorbs a small percentage of an isolate form of vitamins and minerals - and it utilizes even less. You get the best bioavailability in whole food form.

Synthetic vitamins often give you massive quantities of some nutrients (usually the most inexpensive ones) and insufficient quantities of others, not balance.

You can experience side effects of synthetic isolates from the additives and the unnatural state of the synthetic supplement.

You've heard me say it before... Fast food and a sedentary lifestyle can be a disaster for your health.

Don't let your multivitamin add to the collateral damage.

In fact, you want to be sure it makes a real and significant contribution to your health, especially if you've already adopted healthy lifestyle practices.

After all, I'm quite sure you're one of the nearly 100% of the human race who wants to feel on top of the world.... All the time.
